The Delusional Leafs fan

Its been 43 years. But is that really an excuse we can use? After reading what leafs fans have to say on various sites, I've come to the conclusion that most are insane.

I can't even begin to count how many times I've seen articles on Ilya Kovalchuk. Burke has clearly stated that he doesn't like long term deals, and has actually been more precise and said he has no interest in Kovalchuk. And yet, leafs fans keep talking about it.

Well, I'll give them a small break on that because hey, maybe if you talk about it enough it will actually happen?

But we all know thats not the only impossible thing leafs fans have been talking about. You take a look at leafspace and the front page is full of Bobby Ryan blogs. Would I love to have him on the leafs? Yeah of course. But Bob Murray has clearly stated he's not trading Ryan, and yet these delusional leafs fans keep talking about it!

I'll admit, I also sometimes get caught up in rumors. But generally after a gm fully denies it, I don't keep talking about it. And thats what separates us sane leafs fans from the delusional ones.

But lets just think about this. Why are so many leafs fans delusional?

  • Is it the 43 year drought?
  • Is it the fact that we haven't seen playoff hockey in 6 years?
  • is it simply a huge fan base, so there are more nut jobs?
Which do you think is the cause? The habs have the second largest fan base in the NHL and they're all delusional, so could it be a population thing? Is Toronto too close to Quebec?

Let me know what you think, are we delusional?

lol @ too close to Quebec... can we move it a bit further away, please?
its just the way we are, its unreal. I dunno why but every year I hope that this is the year and have optimism. its a rough life.
lol I hear ya. I'm the same way. I just always hope they can make the playoffs. Hell, look at what the habs did.
Haha! Its just so sad, back in the day we hoped for the Cup and now we hope for playoffs. And please don't remind me of the Habs run, I don't wanna throw up again.
lol yeah. If burke can pick up a 30+ goal centreman, their chances will increase greatly. And as for the habs run, they threw away the only thing that got them there. Don't expect another run like that
I think another factor is the media hype they put around these players and when they see that the Leafs had cap space and etc, you would think why wouldn't Toronto sign Kovlalchuk. Now if there was no salary cap I would think Burke might be more intrested, however he is smart in thinking long term. However let's not forget when there was no cap Toronto always tried to sign the big name free agents.
I agree Kovalchuk isn't on Burkes mind, but Bobby Ryan is STILL a possiblity. If Murray can't get him signed, then it's possible, although only thru an offer sheet, he could go elsewhere. Yes, I know the Leafs can't do an offer sheet, due to the fact they don't have a first round pick to make it pliable, but there is the opportunity of a 3 way deal. I don't think you'll see it happen, but it's a possibilty.
Murrary also said he won't be trading Bobby Ryan and even if he was chances are he would want either Luke Scheen or Nazem Kadri in a deal to Toronto and I don't want either of them traded. Besides unlike the Kessel trade Burke has not come out and made any comments about Ryan, unlike when he said the Leafs wanted Kessel. So just because Burke drafted Ryan to the Ducks does not mean he wants to trade for him.
